Anatomy of a site that sells

Everything in the first screen has a job.

A visitor decides in seconds whether to call you or hit back. This is the first screen we built for Packing Bees Movers in San Diego. Seven decisions, each one there to turn a visitor into a quote.

Performance

Speed is the first thing your customers judge.

Before anyone reads a word, they’ve already felt how fast your site appeared. Google has found that more than half of mobile visits are abandoned when a page takes over three seconds to load, and it uses page experience in rankings. So every build has a speed budget it must pass before launch.

Under the hood

The code you never see is the code Google reads.

Two sites can look the same and perform nothing alike. The difference is underneath: clean structure, schema, tracking and speed work that ships with every build. Here’s what that looks like on a sample roofing site.

service-page.html
<header class="site-header"> <a class="logo" href="/">Summit Ridge Roofing</a> <a class="call" href="tel:+17045550142">(704) 555-0142</a></header><main> <section class="hero" aria-labelledby="h1"> <h1 id="h1">Roof Repair in Charlotte, NC</h1> <p>Storm damage fixed fast. Website redesigns

A brand-new site, without losing the rankings you earned.

Most redesigns lose traffic for one boring reason: old URLs disappear and nobody redirects them. The new site looks great on launch day, and the rankings slide over the next three weeks.

So before we design anything, we pull every URL from your current site and Search Console, and decide the fate of each one.

  1. InventoryEvery URL that earns clicks or ranks in the top 20, ranked by traffic.
  2. ClassifyKeep, merge or drop. Keep is the default; anything else needs a reason.
  3. RedirectOne hop, 301, never to the homepage, trailing slashes preserved.
  4. Prove itRe-crawl within 24 hours of launch, then watch Search Console for 14 days.

Landing pages for Google Ads

Paid clicks deserve a page built for one job.

Sending ad traffic to your homepage is the most expensive mistake in most ad accounts. A landing page has one offer, one action and no way out except calling you or filling the form.

  • One page per ad groupThe headline matches the ad that was clicked, which lifts conversions and Quality Score.
  • No menu, no footer linksLogo, phone number, and nothing else to click away to.
  • The form is on the page, above the foldNot a button to another page. Plus a sticky call bar on phones.
  • A thank-you page per conversionCalls and forms tracked separately, so Google Ads bids on what matters.
  • Set to noindexSo it never competes with your SEO pages for the same search.

How we build

Kickoff to launch in three to four weeks.

Most websites go live three to four weeks after kickoff; larger builds with many location pages take four to six. You see real design early, and you get two full rounds of revisions.

  1. Week 1

    Plan

Kickoff call, competitor and keyword research, the sitemap, the page-by-page content plan, the internal link plan and, for redesigns, the redirect map. Nothing is designed before this is agreed.

  2. Week 1–2

    Design

Your homepage in full color, on desktop and on a phone, then the inner pages. Copy is written by a real marketing writer, not filler.

  3. Week 2–3

    Build

A custom WordPress block theme or a Shopify store, built to the speed budget, with schema, forms and tap-to-call on every page.

  4. Week 3

    Track and test

GA4 and Tag Manager connected, calls and forms set up as conversions and tested end to end, then the 20-point QA below.

  5. Week 3–4

    Launch and hand off

Redirects live, sitemap submitted to Search Console, launch-day speed baseline recorded, and your handoff document delivered.

Pre-launch QA20 checks. All of them pass, or it doesn’t launch.
  1. Every page that ranks still resolves at its address
  2. Every redirect: one hop, 301, ends in a 200
  3. No redirect points at the homepage
  4. Every internal link and file resolves
  5. One H1 per page; every title and description unique
  6. Header, footer, mobile call bar and CTA on every page
  7. Every page opens clean in the WordPress editor
  8. Forms validate, submit and land on the right thank-you page
  9. Paid landing pages: no menu, no footer links
  10. Landing and thank-you pages set to noindex
  11. Text and buttons pass 4.5:1 contrast
  12. HTTPS and www rules tested, no mixed content
  13. Sitemap and robots.txt valid
  14. Checked at 390px and 1440px: no overflow
  15. Zero console errors; reduced motion respected
  16. Hero image under 200 KB, preloaded
  17. Page weight under 1.5 MB
  18. No invented facts on any page
  19. Internal link plan built, not just written
  20. Handoff document complete

Choosing a web design company

How to choose a web design company that builds for leads.

Choose a web design company that shows you live sites it built, gives you a fixed price and a launch date, builds SEO and tracking in from day one and hands you every login when it’s done. A site that looks good but loads slowly or can’t be found on Google is an expense, not an asset.

What should I ask a web designer before hiring?

Who owns the domain, hosting and code at the end? What is the fixed price and what does it include? When does it launch? How will the site be found on Google and in AI answers? How are calls and forms tracked? Good answers to all five are the minimum.

What are the red flags?

A site you rent and can’t take with you, a price that grows with every revision, no plan for SEO, a page builder so heavy the site fails Google’s speed tests, or a designer who disappears after launch.

FAQ

Website design, answered.

The questions business owners ask us most before they hire a web design company.

How much does a website cost?

Landing pages start at $800, with packages at $800, $1,200 and $2,000. Full websites are $2,000 for Essentials (up to 6 pages), $3,500 for Growth (up to 12 pages, our most popular) and $6,500 for Authority (up to 25 pages). Every package is a one-time price with no contract, and includes copywriting, mobile-first design, on-page SEO, conversion tracking and a year of managed hosting.

How long does it take to build a website?

Most websites launch three to four weeks after kickoff. Essentials sites take about three weeks, Growth sites three to four, and larger Authority builds four to six. Landing pages take 7 to 10 days. Every package includes two rounds of revisions, and the quicker we get your feedback and photos, the quicker you launch.

Do I own my website?

Yes, 100%. The domain, hosting account, Google Analytics, Tag Manager and Search Console are set up in your name, and all code, copy and images belong to you. At launch you get a handoff document that explains how the site works, so any developer can take over if you ever want to move.

Do you build on WordPress or Shopify?

Both. Service businesses get a custom WordPress block theme built on WordPress's own editor, not a heavy page builder like Elementor or Divi, so the site stays fast and you can edit text and photos yourself. For online stores we build on Shopify.

Will my website be optimized for SEO and AI search?

Yes. Every page gets one clear H1, a unique title and meta description, clean semantic HTML, schema markup such as LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ, an internal link plan, an XML sitemap and a Search Console setup. That same structure helps AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity understand and recommend your business. For ongoing rankings, pair it with our SEO services.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I redesign my site?

Not if the redesign is done properly. Before any design work we list every URL on your current site that earns clicks or ranks, keep those addresses or 301-redirect them in one hop, and never send old pages to the homepage. After launch we re-crawl the site within 24 hours and watch Search Console for 14 days.

How fast will my website be?

Every build has to pass a speed budget before launch: main content visible in under 2.5 seconds on a 4G phone, total page weight under 1.5 MB, a hero image under 200 KB in WebP, and no third-party scripts blocking the page. We record the launch-day numbers in your handoff document.

Will my website work well on phones?

Yes. We design for the phone first, because that's where most local customers find you, then check every page on small, standard and large phones, foldables such as the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold (folded and open), tablets and desktops before launch. Every page has tap-to-call, and forms are short and easy to fill in with a thumb.

Will my website work on the iPhone Duo and other foldable phones?

Yes. Every layout adapts to the space it has, so the site reads well on the iPhone Duo's 5.4-inch cover screen, on its 7.6-inch inner screen that is wider than it is tall, and in Split View next to another app. We check every template folded and unfolded, in portrait and landscape, before launch, and it is included in every package. How we build for foldable phones.

Is conversion tracking included?

Yes, in every package. We connect Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager, set up calls, forms and bookings as separate conversions, and test each one before launch. If you run Google Ads, the conversions are imported so your bidding learns from real leads.

Do you write the content?

Yes. Professional copywriting is included in every package, written by a marketing writer around what your customers search and what makes them call. On Authority builds, the copy comes from interviews with your team.

What happens after the first year of hosting?

Hosting runs about $15 to $25 a month if you'd like us to keep managing it, or you can move the site to any host you like. Optional maintenance plans start at $150 a month and cover updates, backups, security and small content changes.
